it's like he knows

it's like he knows if i get in bed. first i nurse him for like 1/2 an hour. then i spend another 15 minutes trying to get aaaaallllll the burps out of him. then i spend another 10 minutes rocking him. when i finally get up the nerve to try to transfer him to his bed, he some how goes from being totally zonked to wide awake. that's good, right? you are suppose to put them down when they are awake, right? then you are suppose to spend the next 25 minutes holding a binky in and singing "nephi's courage" over and over and over again, ya? then i sneak out carefully placing my feed on the 4 places that don't squeak.
if i get in bed, he wakes up.
if i sit here on the couch, he at least won't cry.
how does he know?
how do babies know?

where is this kind of sleep at 4 am?

10 ways my life has changed recently

10. I blog at 4:52am.
9. I started watching star trek on netflicks (the next generation).
8. I am more grateful for simple pleasures (showering, sleeping, taking my time while i eat etc...).
7. There are lots of days that I don't go "outside" or "get dressed" or "wear a bra."
6. 80% of the time I choose sleeping over eating (this is up from about 20%).
5. I do more things one handed.
4. Food no longer makes me nauseous.

3. I am super aware of people coughing near me.
2. I am probably getting a little too into star trek.
1. I have a baby! It is so wonderful to be a mom. I am loving it.

babies having babies

I know.  It's been a while. Enough of a while for me to make and have a baby so, sorry.  Speaking of babies...mine is named everett.  He is very cute and very tiny and at the moment, very sleepy.  He is 13 days old. He has lots of dark hair and he is generally a very happy little guy. We are so happy to have him in our family. I know you all loooove birth stories, so I thought I would record ours for posterity's sake and for your entertainment. Here goes. (this is the long version)
I had a very normal/easy pregnancy. I never threw up once (continuing the nieman woman tradition). At about 35 weeks I started having a VERY itchy tummy. Obviously some itching is to be expected with all the skin stretching that goes on, and I tried to stick it out for as long as I could- but this was not normal. I stopped being able to sleep at night. I couldn't do my job. I was taking 2-3 oatmeal baths per day (which actually did nothing for me). It was NUTS. One night when I was up at 3 am scratching my stomach, I stumbled upon an article about a rare liver condition called intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (or ICP). Turns out that sometimes the liver/gal bladder can kind of freak out and stop working during pregnancy. This causes an imbalance of "bile acids" (what ever those are) to circulate in the blood and for some reason this causes the crazy itch that can't be touched by benadryl or any known anti itch remedy.  Itching is often the only symptom of ICP.  The only "cure" for ICP is delivery, although there is a medication which helps regulate things enough to stop the itching.  I should also mention that the excess of bile acids make their way across the placenta to the baby and the baby's liver- which cannot filter them out- causing (in some cases)  still birth.  Not something that you want to read at 3 am. Anyway, I called my dr in the morning and she said I needed to come in for some blood work asap. This was a thursday. Luckily my kick trash dr had seen cholestasis before (it is super rare) and knew exactly what tests to do. Apparently it is so rare that there are only a few labs in the US that do the test, so you have to wait like a week to get your results back. My dr offered me the medication that could control the itching- but me, being myself and super crazy about  not taking medicine, thought we should wait until we knew I had it for sure before i started popping pills. However, on friday, after doing tons of research and praying about what to do- i went to the pharmacy to pick up that medicine. I took one that night and one the next morning and the itching was gonezo.  My positive response to the medicine was enough to convince my dr that I for sure had ICP (regardless of the blood test results we were waiting on). She consulted with some other drs and they agreed that I should be induced at 38 weeks to prevent still birth (apparently most still births with ICP happen in the last weeks of pregnancy- so they just induce you before things turn south).  The drs also said that I needed to have non stress tests twice a week to make sure the wee babe was ok (they probably did not use to the term "wee babe" but who knows- maybe they did). This was sunday.  On monday we went in for our first NST. After  monitoring the baby for 1/2 hour the nurse came in and said that things "looked ok." BUT apparently all the NSTs are reviewed by a maternal and fetal medicine specialist (or perinatologist?)  up in slc and when they caught wind that I had cholestasis they recommended delivery by the end of the week. Alan and I were like, "wigga whaaat?" We are suppose to have another MONTH are you CRAZY. So we went home.
The whole time I felt like everything was totally unreal. Like we were all just overreacting to a little itchy tummy. We decided that we needed to get more information and a 2nd opinion from the experts up in slc, so we made an appointment for the next day. This was tuesday.  My main questions for these peeps were 1. Do you really think I have ICP (w/o blood work, can we be super sure it's not something else?) and 2. Does the risk posed by ICP outweigh the risk of inducing me a month early?
answer 1. I told the dr about my response to the medication and he said that I had either had ICP or that that was one heck of a placebo effect. answer 2. and I quote, "the long term outcomes for babies born at 36 weeks are very good. the long term outcomes for still birth are.... not good."
He also explained that the "mechanism" by which ICP causes still birth is not understood. With other issues, typically you can tell from an NST if the baby is in distress but  with ICP there are no signs of trouble. One minute the baby is looking great, the next minute he's gone. So with that, I called my dr and scheduled the induction for the next day  (wednesday).
I was very nervous about having an induction. I know lots of people are induced and it works out just fine. But I felt like the odds were stacked against us as far as avoiding a C-section (it's my first baby, it's a month early, everyone is worried about the baby so at the first sign of trouble i thought they'd wheel me into the operating room... the list goes on...)  I know there are lots of ways to have babies and all of them are ok as long as your baby comes out healthy. I just have a lot of unexplainable anxieties about medicine and blood and needles and cutting me open.  Anyway. I had a dr appointment in the afternoon and she said that I was already 3 cm dilated and 70% effaced. Please take a moment and appreciate what a miracle this was. Thank you. So the dr said that was a great start and the induction should go really well. The plan was to have me come in that night and they would put a cervadil in me to ripen my cervix further. I was suppose to sleep through the night with it in me for 12 hours, then they would start pitocin in the morning. I would labor all day and deliver sometime thursday night/friday morning. My body had other plans.  Instead of cervadil they gave me this other drug called cytotech? This made me a little mad because my dr had specifically told me that she wanted to use cervadil and I had had some time to research it. I didn't know anything about cytotech so I was a nervous about it. Anyway, picture a little sudafed pill. cut it in half. You have a dose of cytotech. it must be pretty powerful stuff because an hour after they placed it I was in active labor. The nurse said that if my body kept this up they wouldn't have to do the pitocin. After a few hours of contractions she checked me and I had only made one cm of progress (this is actually super normal progress for a first time labor, but she made it seem like it wasn't good enough). She said she was going to start the pitocin. Trying to avoid an IV, I asked if she could talk to my dr about giving my body a little more time. Permission granted, I just kept going. After getting the bad news about my progress and feeling threatened by the prospect of pitocin if my cervix failed to meet criteria... I was needless to say a little depressed. I was also super exhausted because the plan had been for me to get a full nights sleep in the hospital that night so I didn't take a nap or anything during the day.
Good thing for best friends in midwifery school. I rang my friend biz at 4 in the morning for a pep talk. Her advice was to get out of bed. Up until this point the nurse had been keeping me in bed so she could monitor things. I finally convinced her to let me stand still next to the bed. After a few contractions like this my water broke. It was just like in the movies. After the water broke my contractions got real intense. I started fainting and throwing up. it was awful. Alan had to keep telling me that everything was ok and that this was normal and that everything was ok and that this was normal. If he stopped saying these things to me i got really anxious and scared and panicky.
About this time (5 am?) the nurse came in and gave me the news that that if i wanted an epidural the anesthesiologist couldn't get to me until noon. I guess they had 3 c-sections and a bunch of inductions scheduled.  I had kind of prepared myself to do things naturally (due to my aforementioned anxiousness about medicine) so I was like, "whatev...let's do this." After another hour or so of cycling through passing our and throwing up, I got in the bath. My dr came in and was talking me through some contractions. Then I completely lost it. I told my dr that I wanted to die and that I needed an epidural before the next contraction hit (knowing full on well it wasn't an option- I think I just needed to hope). She told me to do 5 more contractions and then she would check me and get me an epidural (i don't know if she was aware of the anesthesiologist situation and just making false promises or if she didn't know, but I didn't care). I made it 2 more contractions. Got out of the bath. She checked me and then told me the best news of my entire life... that I was complete and could start pushing. Booyeah. 19 minutes later I wasn't pregnant anymore.  The whole affair was lasted 10 hours. Not too shabby for a first baby ya? Good thing too because I couldn't have done one more contraction.
Everett was super healthy- he breathed right away and got a 9 on his apgar. Everything we had been worried about had been avoided and we had a beautiful little boy.  total miracle count = like 37. And now we get to enjoy him for a whole extra month. Pretty good deal.  So far he is a wonderful wonderful baby. He's a great nurser, a pretty good sleeper, and he has the most adorable face this side of the mississippi. we just love him.

things i have been making

so, only a month and a half this time. please someone praise me for my improvement. i thought i would upload some things from my phone because i always feel really insecure if i blog with no pictures. it's like all you have to evaluate me on is my writing... and i don't even want to think about what that would do to your opinion of me. anyway, here are some things that i have been making...

this is rice. i'm not saying i've been "eating" a lot of rice- because here it is, in tuppers. but we have been making it. in all it's varieties. i have a funny relationship with rice. mostly because whenever i plan to use it in a meal- the rice finishes cooking about 35 minutes after we've eaten all of the other parts of the meal. OR i just end up serving it before it's done so it's crunchy. rice...why can't we just get a long.

this is one of the first things i have pinned and then actually made and put in my house (these are just some free print outs-i didn't actually "make" them. but i did put them in frames). At first i just appreciated the puns, but as these have been hanging in my kitchen the past few weeks i have found that i have been more able to be grateful and also to roll with it.

this is strawberry rhubarb pie. we had pie at our wedding last summer and the other day i just really wanted to have some. so i tried to make this one. long story short, it was a huge disaster. it looked like celery pie. not awesome.

this is my nephew! i didn't make him. but i did make this hat. i even spun the wool. super homemade.

this is a tostada. guys. this is the answer. they are SO good. anytime i can't think of the thing to eat. this is it. i eat several of these guys a week. i would highly recommend you do the same.

this is the baby i have been making for the past 12 weeks. yay! we're due november 26th. things have been going pretty well- i haven't been too sick or anything. just super tired. like a tiredness that i have never known. oh also i have had some crazy food aversions. but i have absolutely no complaints (at least in public- i do actually do quite a bit of complaining). but we are so grateful to get to have a baby and we are so excited!!!!

snappy platypus carousel

(i'm ignoring the fact that i haven't blogged in over 4 months).

so things have been great lately. i won't bother catching you up because if you are reading this- you obviously read my blog, which is, as we all know, a constant outpouring of up to date happenings.
here are a few things-
i've been getting very lucky with birds lately. not in the same way that a boy gets lucky with a lady, mind you. just in the way that humans get lucky when they get to see normal but nonetheless beautiful and amazing things that birds do. alan and i have come to the conclusion that birds have fun. we live next to a little reservoir so we see a lot of birds. i'm pretty certain there is a gang of ducks that has claimed our apartment parking lot as their "turf." there are 8 of them. they get in the middle of the road and perform what seems like a kind of duck flash mob where everyone freezes for a few minutes. i'll creep toward them slowly in the four runner. but they DO NOT move. they just stare you down, as if to say- "uhhh na na na na." and you know that they know all the lyrics to gangster's paradise. please.
today i saw about 100 birds in the same muddy puddle taking legitimate bird bath. it was beautiful.
oh i also saw a very small horse. it was about the size of a medium sized dog.

we recently achieved one of our long time goals. both alan and i are now proud ham radio operators. my call sign is KF7TPG. alan is KF7TPF. isn't it cute that our call signs are sequential? it's like the FCC (federal communications commission) knew we were married. we keep getting letters from people all over the country welcoming us to the ham radio community. the other day we were "monitoring" the "farnsworth peak repeater" (146.62) and we intercepted a transmission of a guy in a plane flying over the grand canyon. that was fun. it's nuts that those radio waves are ALWAYS going through our house. now we have the tools (and appropriate licensing) to hear them.

mmmm what else what else....
OH YEAH gummy vitamins. I've been trying to take a multivitamin but whenever i eat um they make me sick. i tried to stick it out and keep taking them BUT it made alan sad when i felt sick so he hid them. i still don't know where they are. maybe i'll find them when we move some day. but when i find them i will throw them away because now i have GUMMY VITAMINS. i actually wait to take them until after work so i can look forward to them all day. they are candy.
thank you.

my galactic misunderstanding

alan and i have been watching a lot of documentaries about the universe. tonight i had a huge breakthrough. i'm pretty embarrassed about it actually. i kind of have a reputation for being pretty into science. so it is even more embarrassing. here it is...
see how there is a bright light in the middle of the galaxy there? guess what. it is not the sun. The planets in our solar system are not orbiting around that bright light. our sun is just one of the specks of light. that means that there could be billions of other planets JUST in our galaxy. i wish i could express how hard i did not know that. i thought that the milky way was kind of "ours." But really, we are it's. i would also like to apologize if i have ever corrected you about something. you have no reason to ever believe anything i may think or say.

i am amazed at my ignorance. and also how crazy small we are.

halloween and nanowrimo

i'm not usually a big halloween fan. i just like to wear normal clothes ok? alan and i went down to provo for a little halloween party. it was great. being married to alan has really changed my opinion about candy. it's gone from, "candy tastes good but i don't want to eat it because it will make me fat." to, "candy tastes good." halloween is a lot better now.
can you guess what we are? ok i'll tell you. I am wyoming and alan is colorado. we are standing in geographical relation to each other.

Here we are thinking about candy...

Now that October is over we are focusing on the month long celebration of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). The goal is to write 50,000 words by november 30th at midnight. So far I have about 5,000 words. that's 1/10th of a novel! I was going to try to write a real story but i'm more into nonfiction- so i've decided to try to write down all of my memories from when i was little and didn't know how to write. I've always been a journal keeper but it is really interesting to see what my brain remembers all these years later. it's also fun to think about my family so much. When its done it will be like a little slice of Nieman heritage. Brothers and sisters- you should all do this and then we can compile it and publish one of those books that goes back and forth between perspectives. you know...those books that do that?
anyway. happy NaNoWriMo everyone.

wisdom teeth, spinning, and lost

on friday i got my wisdom teeth out. it was awesome. joke. i wonder if wisdom teeth have always been a problem for humans, or if our jaws use to be better equip to accommodate them? anyway. this weekend has been so dumb. i really miss eating real food and not taking massive amounts of medicine. alan has been taking very good care of me, bless his sweet husband heart. i can't wait to feel normal again. anyway, i'll halt with my four wisdom tooth tale already. however, i did take the opportunity to catch up on the last season of LOST. guys. this show is so lame. but i HAD to know how it ended. i'm so glad its over and i will never have to think about it again. also- i would like to say that it was so bad. so are they all dead? did everything actually happen? what the heck.
further, i have started to spin. not on a bike. on a spinning wheel. it is so fun. here are some samples...
special thanks to Mary from Camaj handsupn yarns and to Katy for facilitating this dream. come. true.

fruit

the other day i went over to my friend's house and she had thoughtfully prepared a fruit salad. i'm not super into fruit but i didn't want to be rude... we got to talking about my fruit aversion and i guess i have never actually tried raspberries. soooo this is me trying to have an open minded mouth. i have since eaten four more raspberries and may think about consuming several more in the future.

spaghetti squash oh my gosh

this is my very favorite meal lately. fancy salad with crazins, walnuts, and avocados- featuring the very delicious, nutritious, and non fictitious spaghetti squash. i also have been experimenting with biscuits and rolls. turns out crescent rolls have to rise for a SUPER long time. they ended up being a bed time snack. i should have read the recipe all the way through before starting. every time i got to the next step they had to rise for another hour. also- i have been under the impression that wax paper and parchment paper are essentially the same thing... but apparently wax paper smokes a lot when you bake it. is that normal?
here are the crescent rolls after a smokey kitchen, after a wax paper fiasco, and a long time after dinner. they were pretty good despite the wait.

foodgawker

sooooo i don't usually use capital letters...but: FOODGAWKER. is this a secret that you and the internet have been keeping from me? honestly. if you knew that such a wonderful recipe resource existed and didn't bother telling me about it (so, everyone except google)- i think i need a written apology. and if this is the first you are hearing about the miracle that is foodgawker, a written thank you will do. it is just fantastic. i won't say more. just go there. go there like it's an actual place you could go. go there so hard. go there like you have never been anywhere else.

ok ok ok ok ok

one more recap post and then we will be back in business. so i think we left off just before the weddin'. everything was wonderful. thanks to my mom and tons of ladies from our ward. we were able to have most of both families there. it was just fantastic. however, i will not miss searching high and low for anything sea foam green, coral, and yellow. I've returned to my normal navy blue, grey, and white tendencies. thank goodness.
the adjustment to married life has been surprisingly easy. and i really do mean surprising. everyone told us that the first year would be awful but that it would eventually get better. we are crossing our fingers that an easy first year doesn't mean that the rest of the years will be hard. haha. we spend most of our time watching 'the office' on netflix, indexing, or going on walks.

anyway... we have been loving our little life. before we got married i quit my cushy (joke) school slp job without having anything else lined up. then we moved to draper. then we unpacked boxes. then i started job hunting. it was surprisingly hard. buuut long story (filled with many miracles and blessings from God) short, i found one. i work at a skilled nursing/rehabilitation center that is 4 minutes from my house. actually it is more like 7 now that school has started (there are like 3 school zones between my house and my work). i really love my job. it's been a good change of pace from working at a school. it is amazing how different working with kids and adults is. i can't decide if 4 year olds are funnier than 80 year olds. or who is more inappropriate.

here are some kissey wedding pictures...

the most beautiful flowers that have ever happened to a wedding...mustache fun at fentons...

baby goats

something you may not know about me is that i have suddenly become kind of interested in baby goats (and goats in general). something you may not know about baby goats is that they are adorable. i just stumbled upon this delightful cache of goat pictures and personal goat information.
I would definitely recommend spending a few minutes poking around the "goat album" and don't miss out on the "kidding schedule." Oh and the bios on the sale page are pretty good.
here is a little something to pique your interest...

federal government mormon ads

this is why i am glad the federal government doesn't get to teach religion in public school...
it takes this...
and turns it into this...

chipmunks? ok.

fun things that have happened

it's so hard to come back from a blogging hiatus. the thing that i think everyone likes most about blogs is looking at pictures. so, to lure you back to the "safety dance," I will give you what you want...

just a little adventure with the nephews over christmas break. they continue to be so adorable and funny. they are looking for the frozen yogurt store.

I bought this rug at ikea. i have never seen a rug that i really just loved. and i still haven't. but this one is alright.

alan, looking very style at the grilled cheese gala OF THE CENTURY (thanks to becca and kyle).

and this is RUBY (also thanks to becca and kyle). my only hope is that she falls in love with one of my nephews.

fun times at the international market by IKEA in california. we are all looking very style. especially katy...who is now my very official roommate. and i love that about her.

THIS is a very large political map of the world. it stays in my kitchen (my table is not usually this messy, how embarrassing). we have a lot of fun playing geography games and making fun of the things people name islands.

the blogging

welp. here we are again. me apologizing for not blogging. which, i guess, when you think about it, is really arrogant of me to do. since it assumes that you are probably all soooo interested in my tiny human life that the absence of frequent updates has kept you awake at night for months. i knew it. i'm sorry.
so. what the happ's is: i live in orem, ut. a place which i have heretofore avoided, but, as it turns out, is great. i love it. i have made lots of great friends here and i love living in "the four-plex." i have been doing all sorts of big-kid things. i have benefits. i bought a couch at a department store. heck, i bought dishes with birds on them. i have a job. i am a speech language pathologist for realzies now. i work at an elementary school and a special needs pre-school. it is SO funny and fun. AND it is 2 minutes away from my house. win. my bangs are approximately one half inch from being grown out. double win. so many good things. please enjoy this picture of my school picture.

google maps

dear google maps,
i know you are the best, but i would really appreciate it if you would be more forthcoming when i ask you about near by hobby lobby locals. you made me drive nearly 35 minutes. there is a hobby lobby approximately 6 minutes from my house. why you gotta front?
